What should you expect from axe throwing? In this fun lumberjack inspired sport participants throw axes at a target more than 3 metres away. Standing behind the throw line you will take aim and throw your axe at one of our tree round recycled wooden targets. We use specialist throwing axes, and our instructors will coach you to make sure you get some axes stuck! You’ll have an hour to get in the swing of things with one of our instructors guiding you on the best throwing techniques. Once you’ve got some decent practice time under your belt we typically then progress the session onto more advanced throws and tricks shots so you can unleash the barbarian warrior within! It’s a bit like a game of darts or aunt sally only with axes! You can even add knife throwing into your 60 minute session as an add-on (though this option is included within the hour, there is no additional timed added to the session)

-
We are located at Carrimers Farm, OX11 9DP. You must book in advance and all ticket holders receive detailed directions at the bottom of their booking confirmation email.
-
We can run sessions for up to 30 people, for more than 14 people we recommend booking multiple activities so we can split the group up into multiple groups doing several activities. This means each person gets more time doing the fun activities and less time waiting or watching. See our warrior package for booking axe throwing and archery together at a discounted rate.
We are able to run sessions for even larger groups but this depends on instructor availability. Message us by email to book in any group larger than 10 people.
-
You can book via BookingHound as the quickest and best way to secure your booking. Just click ‘book now’. We cannot hold a booking without payment in advance. For groups of more than 10 you must contact us at events@affg.co.uk for a private session and we will send you an invoice or a link for payment details. We cannot reserve a booking without payment, you can pencil a timeslot, but this is not a confirmed booking until we have received payment for a session. For groups of 14 or more people we can take a deposit to hold the booking.

Simply put, yes, if you make sure to follow all the rules and listen to the safety briefing from your instructor axe throwing is incredibly safe. We use specially designed throwing axes that are blunt, they are not razor sharp, we have a 9 page risk assessment as well as being fully insured. You can find some of the safety briefing and our risk form here
-
For axe throwing we advise wearing comfortable clothing, layers for the winter and autumn months as it can get cold in the barn. Make sure to avoid wearing jewellery, tie back any long hair, and we do not allow alcohol or people wearing open toed shoes for axe related reasons. All throwers will need to complete a risk awareness form before taking part. You can find the form here
-
We don’t allow dogs on the range, it’s not the safest environment to mix dogs running around with axe throwing (as axes are essentially big sticks with blades on them) so best to leave any four legged friends at home. Exceptions can be made for assistance dogs, but they must be kept on lead and tied outside of any activity areas.
-
We wouldn’t recommend bringing spectators, as axe throwing requires maximum space for safety and there are few places to stand out of the way. We have space for a maximum of 6 spectators, but please let us know in advance if you are bringing any non-throwing spectators so we can best plan the session. We cannot guarentee space for spectators without being informed in advance. Any spectators who turn up at sessions without prior notice may be told to remain outside of the room for safety. Any spectators in the room will be expected to fill out a risk form and to watch the safety briefing.
-
Most people think this is a joke, but you can bring your own axes and throwing knives. All axes must be inspected by our instructor before throwing to make sure they aren’t razor sharp, you cannot throw an axe if it is, they must be blunt. Any person bringing their own axes throws them at their own liability, as certain models of axes are prone to breaking and smashing handles if they’re not designed for throwing, not every axe is a good throwing axe. Just make sure to transport your axes and knives in a secure container and follow all rules and UK laws on transporting axes and knives, they must be secure and not transported publicly.
-
Knife throwing has a very similar technique to axe throwing, which is why they are often taught together, knives are lighter weight and they spin quicker and they are moderately more dangerous due to bouncebacks, but otherwise it is a similar technique. For more advanced knife throwing there is a different ‘no-spin’ technique.
-
If you choose to add knife throwing to your session this entitles you to also learn how to throw knives in the same session (steel professional throwing knives). Knife throwing has it’s own quick safety briefing a well as technique guidance, but the add-on does not add extra time into the session. This option is a little harder/more advanced than axe throwing so participants should be prepared for things to get more difficult when progressing to knives.
-
We get lots of enquiries about suitability for axe throwing. Mainly from people who have certain injuries, disabilities or those who are pregnant.
If in doubt, contact your GP to ask if your medical condition would prevent you from axe throwing. All that is required is mobility in your arm to bend your elbow, and to lift an axe (roughly around 665 grams - 717 grams)
Our range is fully wheelchair accessible with level access on entrances and exits and a wheelchair accessible bathroom.
-
We require at least 24 hours notice in writing to refund a booking, to request a refund you must send an email to events@affg.co.uk. We can very quickly and easily change the date or time of a booking should you need to reschedule a session.

★★★★★ “Fantastic experience axe throwing! Harry was a great instructor with his fun and informative approach and had even the least coordinated of us *cough* hitting the target by the end of the session. Will definitely be going again at some point - strongly recommend giving this a go.” - Hannah
★★★★★ Excellent experience! Full instruction given, and by the end you’ll feel like you are out of Robin Hood or the Patriot nailing those perfect bullseyes with grace and cocky flair (but in a safe and considerate gentlemanly/ ladylike fashion). Throwing axes and then a few pints after is the perfect evening. Book it! - Oliver
★★★★★ Our axe throwing experience was excellent. Harry’s simple and effective advice helped us to find our Zen with a range of activities and throws. We even managed to hit the target on a regular basis. Nice to have an instructor who is so enthusiastic that he participates actively with you to help you to progress. The location is great too. Tucked away in a private woodland that helps to transport you away from humdrum! - Stephen
★★★★★ Absolutely amazing axe throwing session with Harry last weekend. Cannot fault his clear communication, safety briefing, caching style, or sense of fun - and he got us all hitting the target, what more could you ask for? Would highly recommend this and will definitely be back. Thank you Harry! - Alice
★★★★★ Great experience, as a axe throwing noobie, great training and covid safe experience - Richard
★★★★★ What a fantastic experience this was! I’m honestly so thrilled to have had the space, a wonderful instructor like Harry and the axes to throw for an afternoon, only to find out just how much of a natural I was with no previous experience. Perhaps all the movie watching has built up my inner warrior that I had waited to finally unleash. We had such a great time, great laugh. Harry was so much fun to be around and so good with keeping an eye on you to help you improve within a short space of time. I wish we had booked a longer session, we will definitely be coming back! I can’t believe I did a double axe throw on first try! I felt so empowered and capable, the one thing I actually just naturally ‘understood’ I was very proud. I highly highly recommend checking this out, you’ll have great fun unleashing your inner Viking! It’s perfectly safe, perfectly instructed and really fun. Don’t miss out. We will be coming back. - Paulina
★★★★★ Super fun afternoon activity for our mixed family group aged 23-53. Harry gave very clear instructions and was brilliant at correcting little flaws in our different techniques. He was very encouraging and taught us several different throw styles which made the activity more varied and fun. Definitely recommend as a fun and quirky afternoon activity. The site is very basic, but the rustic feel really enhances the experience - it's lovely to throw access into wooden targets between rows of trees, really gives everything that authentic "Viking" feeling! - Liz
★★★★★ Went with a bunch of nine, great fun and just down the road from Wallingford. Beautiful setting! Plenty of time to practise throwing axes with some fun competitions and trick shots thrown in the mix. - Annaliese

Harry explained everything brilliantly and before we knew it we were hitting the target (some more than others ). Would highly recommend. - Danielle

★★★★★ I took a gang of friends to Ridgeway to throw axes, for a different night out, last Friday. It was a riot but in a really good and safe way! Harry is a true entertainer and kept all of us fully enthused for a couple of hours. We all skipped off with a spring in our step and vowed to return with others who need to have a go. - Alasdair

★★★★★ Your palms are sweaty. The Viking warrior roars. He's charging, running, he wants to kill you. His shield is broad and his sword is shining. Your axes are heavy in your hands. You swing the first back, waiting for the moment. Fifteen metres. Harry roars at you: "Throw!" It's a bad axe throw, you know that as soon as it leaves your hand. The haft hits the raging warrior in his helmet and he pays no heed. 10 metres. Your last axe, your only remaining weapon. "Throw!"
It's a good throw. The axe sinks into the Danish soldier, and he crumples to the ground. Lucky for you that you'd attended a Ridgeway Axe Throwing session, wasn't it? - Carl
★★★★★ Had a fantastic afternoon of axe throwing with my family of 5 under Harry's expert tuition. This was the first time any of us had thrown an axe and Harry's instructions and demonstrations were brilliant and helped every one of us hit the targets by the end of the session. The setting is perfect for the activity, set in a small private wood on the operators farmland. Harry struck the right tone; professional yet relaxed which made it fun for everyone. I highly recommend this activity as something a bit different that would appeal to the whole family. - James
